Such works tend to heighten refinement and ornament (as in ukiyo-e courtesan prints) and feature women who are unguarded and whose personalities go unregarded. The girls share no exchange of gaze or feeling with the viewer — perhaps unaware they are being watched (voyeurism?), or with mirror-like eyes that coolly return the gaze: “I know you are looking at me.” She conveys no feminine sentiment; she only reflects our desire to look. In the 1970s–90s a girl who appeared in public had to endure curious stares; anxious about marriage, work and other social barriers after graduation, girls sought refuge in girls’ schools, girls’ magazines and all-girl worlds, finding a little comfort in wistful illustrations of girls. Since 2000 society has grown freer and leisure more abundant, yet a flood of media has deepened objectification — the girls’ melancholy has not lifted, and the tangled thoughts of adolescence have not eased.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWave II\u003c\/em\u003e is a 2026 original work by Pigo Lin — coloured ink on paper, 29 × 38 cm.
