Erotica describes mutually pleasurable sex without violence or abuse; pornography depicts sex involving aggression, violence and domination (Padgett, 1989). “Erotica” comes from Eros — love and desire — and is set apart from pornography by mutuality, choice and sharing: a pleasure held in common, where people choose freely and have the power to express their sexuality. Pornography lacks choice and involves violence, dominance and conquest; sex is used to reinforce inequality, pain and degradation (Steinem, 1995). In short, the line between the two lies in whether the relationship depicted is equal or unequal.

Against burnt orange a woman in a pale blue kimono kneels side-on, her eyes bound with a red ribbon — clean lines and open space evoke the senses heightened by a blindfold.
Pigo Lin, pain spa 06, 2026.
