Collection: Andres Catig

Andres Catig (born 1997) was born in Bulacan, Philippines, and currently works

and lives in Marilao.

He graduated in 2020 from the Eulogio "Amang" Rodriguez Institute of Science and

Technology, majoring in Visual Communication. In addition to painting, he also dabbles in toy

making, extending the construction of his characters and worldview through different media.

Catig's creations stem from observations of daily life, dreams, illness, death, and inner psychological states.

He is skilled at transforming the subtle yet inexpressible emotions of reality into character images that lie between fantasy and nightmare, constructing a unique visual language with vibrant and highly saturated colors, flowing and distorted bodily structures, and brushstrokes full of slime and organic vitality. These characters possess both cartoonish humor and existential unease, causing viewers to repeatedly oscillate between the absurd and the familiar.

The artist is deeply influenced by artists and writers such as Keith Haring, Louie Cordero, Alex Grey, and H. P. Lovecraft, integrating street art, popular culture, surreal painting, and Lovecraftian cosmic horror to develop a highly recognizable contemporary narrative style.

His characters are not simply monsters, but rather the concrete projections of human emotions, anxiety, loneliness, and life experiences, reflecting the spiritual state of modern people in a rapidly changing society through exaggerated, distorted bodies and dramatic expressions.

In recent years, Catig has remained active in the Philippine contemporary art scene, exhibiting his works in important art spaces such as Eskinita Art Farm, Altro Mondo, Vinyl on Vinyl, Stuart Gallery, Kalawakan Spacetime, and Space Encounters Gallery, and held his first solo exhibition "Skins" in 2024.

His creations continuously explore the possibilities of characters as emotional carriers and narrative mediums, and he is gradually becoming one of the representative Lowbrow Art and Pop Surrealism artists of the new generation in the Philippines.
