HENDRAHEHE|Hendrahehe (Indonesia)

**Hendra “HeHe” Harsono (born in Indonesia in 1983)** is a contemporary artist who works across painting, sculpture, and art toys. His artistic language revolves around “childlike fantasy” and “contemporary cultural observation,” integrating life experiences, the information society atmosphere, and popular culture symbols into his canvases and three-dimensional works to construct a visual world that is both humorous and critical.

HeHe is best known for his iconic surreal characters—characters with a childlike innocence yet a touch of the bizarre. These characters often take the form of various objects, seemingly possessing souls and personalities, engaging in a silent dialogue on the canvas. For him, creation is a game of imagination and a celebration of color; through fantastical characters, he reinterprets personal experiences and social phenomena, presenting his observations in a humorous yet profound way.

His works blend diverse elements such as pop culture, the independent movement, comics, lowbrow art, street culture, and fashion, reflecting the multiple contradictions and rich perspectives faced by the post-80s generation under the impact of globalization, the MTV era, and internet culture.

As a key representative of Indonesian emerging art, HeHe began his career at the Indonesian Academy of Arts in Yogyakarta in the early 2000s, gradually developing a distinctive creative vocabulary. He is also one of the founding members of "Ace House Collective." Since its establishment in 2011, the group has been dedicated to exploring the intersection of youth culture and contemporary art, expanding the possibilities of art and popular culture through curation, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and public discussions.

In terms of international exhibitions, HeHe remains active in Asia, the United States, and Europe. He has held solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and other cities, with his 2024 exhibition "ONCE UPON A BLUE LIGHT" at Thinkspace in Los Angeles considered a significant milestone in his international career. He also frequently participates in major art fairs and international group exhibitions, including "LAX/AMS" at the Straat Museum in Amsterdam, the "SURREAL" group exhibition at the Vertical Gallery in Chicago, and "Manifesto 6.0" at the National Gallery of Jakarta.

HeHe's work spans the realm of fine art and also extends to brand and design collaborations. He has worked with Louis Vuitton, Modena, Artotel, and others to launch toy, merchandise, and spatial art projects, showcasing how art can intervene in popular culture and daily life. He is also involved in art education, participating in workshops on paper sculpture toys and stained glass painting, giving back his creative energy to the community.
