First-time gallery visitors often ask: “Why is this work by the artist NT$20,000 and that one NT$100,000?” Art pricing can look mysterious, but there is a fairly clear logic behind it. Understanding it isn’t about calculating to the dollar — it helps you see what a price reflects when you stand in front of a work you love. Here are the main factors, and some advice on choosing within your budget.
1. Original or print?
This is the most direct factor. An original exists only once and is usually priced higher; a limited-edition print is made in a fixed number with the artist’s authorisation, each signed and numbered, and is more accessible. The gap between an original and a print of the same image can be large, but both are genuine collection pieces. See Original, limited-edition print or giclée?
Edition size matters too
Among limited-edition prints, the smaller the edition (say, 20), the more each impression tends to be valued; larger editions let more people collect the work.
2. Size
For the same artist and medium, size is usually the biggest source of price difference: larger works take more time, material and compositional work. Price isn’t strictly proportional to area, though — a small work may be priced higher for its finish or significance. When choosing a size, think about your wall too: our free Art in Your Room Studio shows a work on your wall at true scale.
3. Medium and process
Oil or acrylic on canvas, works on paper, mixed media and sculpture all differ in materials, time and conservation needs. Works built up in many layers over a long time, or made with special materials, generally reflect that investment. Works on paper and small works are often a great way to start.
4. The artist’s career
How long the artist has been working, their solo and group exhibitions, art fair appearances, collections that hold their work and the level of interest in it are all reflected in price. Artists with longer, fuller exhibition histories tend to command higher prices, while emerging artists often offer a more accessible entry point. A good place to start is the artist’s page and exhibition history — Neverland Gallery’s artists and exhibitions are listed on our gallery facts page.
5. The work’s place in the artist’s practice
A key work in a series, the lead image of an exhibition, or a piece that marks a turning point may be priced differently from others by the same artist. This is hard to tell from a photo — asking the gallery is the quickest way to find out.
6. Other details: framing and delivery
Some works come framed, others as an unframed canvas or sheet, so check whether a frame is included. Within Taiwan’s main island we offer home delivery or pick-up at the gallery; outlying islands, international destinations and large works are quoted by size and destination — see our shipping policy.

Three tips for choosing within a budget
- Set the budget first, then fall in love: choosing the work that moves you most within a comfortable sum is far easier than the other way round.
- Compare within one artist’s work: prices across different artists don’t compare well; across one artist’s sizes, media, originals and prints, the logic becomes clear.
- Ask: why is this one higher? Is there a smaller work from the same series? Is it framed? The gallery is happy to explain.
