The living room wall is the one you see most. The right artwork gives the space character and makes coming home feel good. You don’t need to be an art expert — get four things right: size, height, colour and budget.
1. Size: about two-thirds of the sofa
Above a sofa, artwork roughly two-thirds of the sofa’s width usually looks balanced — too small feels empty, too big feels heavy. On a wide wall, hang two or three smaller pieces side by side, or a series by one artist. Mark the size on the wall with masking tape first.
2. Height: centre at eye level
A common rule is to hang the centre of the artwork about 145–150 cm from the floor — standing eye level. Above a sofa, leave about 20–25 cm between the frame and the back of the sofa. For a group, treat the whole arrangement as one piece.
3. Colour: echo the room, or make a statement
For calm harmony, pick a colour from your sofa, cushions or curtains and look for it in the artwork. For personality, choose contrasting or saturated colours and let the work be the focal point. White walls and neutral furniture suit bold pop art or animal paintings especially well.
4. Budget: original or limited edition
An original is made by the artist’s own hand — one of a kind. A limited-edition print is signed and numbered and more affordable, a good first step. Browse by budget: under NT$20,000, NT$20,000–60,000, over NT$60,000. More in Original, limited-edition print or giclée?
