Collecting Southeast Asian Contemporary Art: New-Generation Artists from the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia

JJ Zamoranos 個展〈DAYBREAK〉於 Neverland Gallery 台北展出

When people think of Asian contemporary art, Japan and Korea often come first. But Southeast Asian contemporary art — especially new-generation artists from the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia — is drawing growing attention at art fairs and among young collectors. Neverland Gallery has been bringing their work to Taipei since it opened.

What defines the new generation?

Many young Southeast Asian artists come from street art, comics, animation and youth culture. Their work often features bold colour, strong characters and expressive eyes — light on the surface, with observations of city life, identity and growing up underneath.
