Buying Your First Original Artwork: 7 Questions New Collectors Ask

第一次買藝術品原作|Neverland Gallery 展場(IN THE PARK)

Buying your first original artwork often feels like “I love it, but where do I start?” How much should I spend? What is a certificate? How is a print different from an original? Here are the 7 questions new collectors ask most, to help you take the first step with confidence.

1. How much should I budget?

There is no “right” amount to spend on art. Set a figure you are comfortable with, then choose the work that moves you most within it. At Neverland Gallery you can browse by budget:

2. Original or limited-edition print?

An original is made by the artist’s hand and is the only one in the world; a limited-edition print is produced in a fixed number with the artist’s authorisation, each signed and numbered. Originals offer uniqueness and brushwork; prints let you own an image you love at a more accessible price. Both are worth collecting — it depends on what you want. (We will compare the two in a future article.)

3. What is a certificate, and why does it matter?

A certificate records a work’s origin and authenticity, which matters if you ever sell or pass it on. Neverland Gallery originals come with an artist-signed or gallery certificate of authenticity; limited-edition prints come with a signature, edition number and an embossed seal. Keep it safe together with the original packaging.

4. How do I choose the right size?

Every artwork page lists its specifications — size, medium and year. Measure your wall first, then mark the artwork’s size with painter’s tape and step back to judge the proportions. Above a sofa or bed, a work about 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the furniture usually looks balanced.

5. Can I see the work in person?

Yes — and we recommend it. Brushwork, colour and texture look very different in person. The gallery is in Xinyi, Taipei (near Fubon Art Museum), open Tuesday–Saturday 13:00–18:00. Book a visit online or ask us on LINE @neverland.gallery.

6. How do shipping, packing and payment work?

  • Packing: every work is professionally packed by gallery staff with multiple layers of protection.
  • Shipping: home delivery within Taiwan, or pick-up at the gallery by appointment; please ask us for overseas shipping rates. See our shipping policy.
  • Payment: credit card and PayPal; for higher-priced works, ask about instalments via LINE or email.

7. Can I return or exchange a work?

Original artworks are unique and cannot be returned or exchanged once sold. Limited-edition prints damaged in transit or shipped in error can be exchanged under our policy (please record a full unboxing video). If you have any questions before buying, talk to us — we are happy to share condition details, more photos or hanging advice.

In short: start with what you love

The first reason to collect is always that the work makes you happy every time you see it. Start with what moves you, then match it to your budget and space — and your collection has already begun.
