Collecting Your First Work at a Gallery: From Viewing and Inquiry to Bringing It Home

Collecting Your First Work at a Gallery: From Viewing and Inquiry to Bringing It Home

Collecting a work at a gallery usually follows six steps: book a visit, see the work in person, ask the gallery about it, preview it at home, arrange payment and delivery, then receive the work with its certificate. Here is what to pay attention to at each step.

This guide is about the process: what happens between walking into a gallery and hanging a work on your wall. For practical questions on budget, originals and prints, see 7 questions new collectors ask. For how a collection grows over the years, read the art collecting roadmap.

The collecting process at a glance

  1. Book a visit: choose an exhibition you want to see and reserve a time.
  2. See the work in person: look closely at brushwork, colour and scale, and note the works that move you.
  3. Ask the gallery: confirm the format, details, condition and how to collect it.
  4. Preview it at home: check scale and mood on a photo of your own wall.
  5. Payment, packing and delivery: confirm how you will pay and how the work reaches you.
  6. After it arrives: check the work, keep the certificate safe and hang it.

Step 1: Find an exhibition and book a visit

Most collections begin with a visit. Galleries usually announce their current exhibitions online or on social media, and many work by appointment. Checking dates and opening hours first makes the visit far more relaxed than simply dropping in.

At Neverland Gallery, visits are by appointment and admission is free. We are open Tuesday to Saturday, 13:00–18:00, and closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays. Please book at least one day ahead on our booking page or via LINE @neverland.gallery; we cannot accommodate same-day walk-ins.

What to mention when you book

  • The exhibition or artist you would like to see.
  • Whether you are considering collecting or simply want to look. Both are welcome.
  • How many people are coming. Group visits are free and can be booked for up to 40 people.

With this in mind, the gallery can prepare information in advance. You can also request an artwork list by LINE or email.

Step 2: See the work in person

Brushwork, layers of colour and texture look very different in person than on a screen. Walk through the whole show first, then return to the works that stopped you and ask yourself: would I like to see this every day?

  • Look near and far: step close for surface and texture, then step back for composition and presence.
  • Bring your wall measurements: measure your wall and furniture before you come, so you can compare sizes on the spot.
  • Take photos: Photography of the exhibition and the works is welcome! If you can, please tag @neverland.gallery so more people can discover our gallery. Thank you!
  • Please don't touch: original surfaces are delicate, so keep a little distance.

You don't need to be an expert. Ask about the medium, the size or the artist's story. Visiting by appointment means someone has time to walk you through the works.

Step 3: Ask the gallery about the work

When a work speaks to you, the next step is to ask. This is the most important part of the process: clear information leads to a confident decision. Common questions include:

What to askWhy it matters
Original or limited edition printAn original is made by the artist's hand and is one of a kind; a limited edition is produced in a fixed number with the artist's authorisation.
Size, medium and yearHelps you decide where it can hang and how to care for it.
Signature and edition number (prints)Confirms the numbering, signature and accompanying documents.
Condition and framingTells you how the work will arrive and whether it needs a frame.
PaymentConfirms which payment methods are available and whether instalments can be discussed.
Delivery or pick-upLets the gallery plan the best option for the size and destination.

At Neverland Gallery you can ask about a work's condition, request more photos or get hanging advice. Works may be collected during an exhibition, so if one stays on your mind, check with us via LINE @neverland.gallery or art@neverland.gallery.

Certificates for originals and prints

Every work at Neverland Gallery comes with a certificate of authenticity. Originals include the artist's signature or a gallery certificate; limited edition prints include the artist's signature, an edition number and an embossed seal. Learn more in our guide to certificates of authenticity.

Step 4: Preview it at home

A work that glows on a white gallery wall can feel different next to your own furniture and light. Before deciding, use Neverland Gallery's free View in Your Room tool to place the work at true scale on a photo of your wall.

  • Photograph the wall straight on to avoid distortion.
  • Measure the wall and the width of the sofa or bed below it.
  • Torn between two works? Preview each one and compare.

Step 5: Payment, packing and delivery

Once you decide, the gallery will confirm payment and delivery with you. Every gallery works a little differently; here is how Neverland Gallery does it:

  • Payment: credit card and PayPal; for high-value works, ask about instalments via LINE or email.
  • Packing: every work is professionally packed by our team in multiple layers of protective material.
  • Taiwan main island: professional home delivery, or pick-up at the gallery by appointment.
  • Outlying islands and overseas: please ask via LINE or email first; quotes depend on size and destination.
  • Large or high-value works: delivery by our team or a professional fine art shipper (quoted separately).

Please note: originals are unique and cannot be returned once collected. Limited edition prints damaged in transit or sent in error can be exchanged under our policy. That is why asking clear questions in Step 3 matters.

Step 6: After the work arrives

  • Film the unboxing: record the whole unboxing so there is a record if anything was damaged in transit.
  • Keep the certificate: it documents the work's origin and authenticity, which matters if it is ever passed on. Store it with the original packaging.
  • Start a collection record: note photos, artist, title, year, medium, size, edition, source and date.
  • Choose the right spot: soft light, away from direct sun and damp.

Three tips for your first work

  • Love comes first: advice helps, but the real question is whether you want to see it every day.
  • No need to decide on the spot: see it, preview it, ask again, then decide.
  • Stay in touch: tell the gallery what you are drawn to, and you will hear first when a matching work comes in.

FAQ

Do I need to book before visiting a gallery to collect a work?

It depends on the gallery. Neverland Gallery is open by appointment with free admission. Please book at least one day ahead via the booking page or LINE @neverland.gallery; same-day walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

Can I ask about a work if I don't know much about art?

Of course. Starting from what you love is enough. You can ask the gallery team anything: the medium, size, the artist's story, or whether it is an original or a limited edition print.

Do the works come with a certificate?

Every work at Neverland Gallery comes with a certificate of authenticity. Originals include the artist's signature or a gallery certificate; limited edition prints include the artist's signature, an edition number and an embossed seal.

How is the work delivered?

Within Taiwan's main island: professional home delivery, or pick-up at the gallery by appointment. For outlying islands and overseas, please ask via LINE or email first; a quote is based on the work's size and destination. Large or high-value works can be delivered by our team or by a professional fine art shipper (quoted separately).

Can I see how a work will look in my home first?

Yes. Neverland Gallery's free View in Your Room tool lets you preview a work at true scale on a photo of your own wall.
