How to Visit an Art Gallery: Booking, Etiquette and Photos

To visit an art gallery, check the opening hours and whether you need an appointment; most galleries are free. Inside, don't touch the works, keep your voice low, check the photo policy, and feel free to ask questions.

Walking into a gallery for the first time can feel intimidating. Is there a ticket? Will it be awkward if I don't know much about art? Can I take photos? This guide covers gallery etiquette from before you leave home to the moment you walk out. New to the idea? Start with what is an art gallery, or browse our guide to art galleries in Taipei.

Before you go: three things to check

  1. Opening hours: galleries often close on Mondays or Sundays, and may close between exhibitions while installing.
  2. Appointments: some galleries are walk-in, others are by appointment and list a booking form or messaging account on their website.
  3. The current show: read the title, the artists and a few lines of the exhibition text. You'll get more out of the visit.

Is there an entrance fee?

Almost always, no. A gallery's job is to get artists seen, so everyone is welcome. Art fairs where galleries take part may charge admission, but exhibitions in a gallery's own space are generally free.

Why some galleries work by appointment

An appointment isn't a barrier. In a small space it means someone can set time aside to introduce the works and artists while you look at your own pace. When booking, you'll usually be asked for your preferred date and time, the number of people, and whether you'd like a guided introduction.

Gallery etiquette: seven simple rules

  • Don't touch the works: oils and moisture from hands can leave marks, on sculpture too, unless a work invites interaction.
  • Mind your bag: backpacks, umbrellas and selfie sticks can brush against a piece when you turn.
  • Leave food and drinks outside.
  • Keep your voice low and take phone calls outdoors.
  • Keep children close: kids are welcome; agree on "looking with our eyes" first.
  • Share the view: linger as long as you like, but step aside if someone is waiting.
  • Say hello and goodbye: it lets the team know whether you'd like help.

Can you take photos in an art gallery?

It depends on the gallery. Look for signs at the entrance or desk, and ask if you're unsure. Where photos are allowed, turn off the flash, skip tripods and lights unless agreed in advance, avoid other visitors' faces, contact the gallery first for commercial shoots, and credit the artist and gallery when you post.

How to look at an exhibition

  1. Read the exhibition text near the entrance.
  2. Do a quick first lap to get the overall feel and note what catches your eye.
  3. Go back to your favourites: step close for brushwork, texture and paper, then step back for composition.
  4. Read the labels: title, year, medium and size often unlock a work.
  5. Ask for the price list if one is available.

Good questions to ask: Where is the artist from? Is this an original or a limited edition? What is the series about? Are there other works by this artist?

If a work stays with you

Most works in a gallery are available on enquiry, even when no price is on the wall. Ask about price and format, actual size, the certificate of authenticity and delivery. There's no need to decide on the spot: photograph the label, take the list home and measure your wall first.
