"Between the Frames: Fragment of Torso" is a series of expansive paintings. The series originates from the image of the torso in classical sculpture, translating it through processes of fragmentation and reconstruction while incorporating visual lexicons from anime, subcultures, and digital imagery. By treating the body as a state that can be disassembled and reconfigured—rather than a complete, unified form—the work explores how this "divisibility" exists not only within the imagery but extends into the physical structure of the canvas itself.
Through the cutting and arrangement of irregular canvases, this series structures the work similarly to comic panels and layered digital imagery. Consequently, painting is no longer confined to a single viewpoint or a fixed time and space, but instead presents a juxtaposition of multiple temporalities and spatialities. The canvas thus becomes a fluid system rather than a closed representation.
In this context, the torso is no longer perceived as a truncated body, but as an open state, allowing for the generation of new perceptions and interpretations. The body fragments dispersed across the canvases form a critical state between continuity and rupture; the gaps between the canvases not only refer to the absence of the body but also function as a field of viewing, guiding the viewer to actively participate in the reconstruction of the image through the movement and synthesis of their gaze.
This structure corresponds to the "gutter" in comics and the multi-layered interfaces of digital imagery, enabling classical figurative art to be re-perceived and repositioned within contemporary visual culture. "Between the Frames: Fragment of Torso" attempts to interweave the language of classical sculpture with the contemporary image environment at the level of material and structure in painting, further contemplating whether fragments and gaps can become conditions for generating new viewing experiences, thereby redefining the position of painting within the complex ecological landscape of contemporary images.
