About this work
From a misty lavender-grey ground emerges a woman's face with closed eyes, one hand resting against her throat. Turquoise flecks scatter across her face and hand like mineral crystals or traces of coral, while swirls of orange-red, gold-green and white ornament surround her like coral swaying underwater. Softness and erosion coexist – resilient, yet seemingly fragile.
She is Coral is an original work by YuTung Ko (2026), mineral pigments, metal leaf and mixed media on paper mounted on wooden board, 35 × 27.5 cm. You are welcome to book a visit to view it in person at Neverland Gallery in Xinyi District, Taipei.

Generally speaking, adult corals do not move actively, but they do not stop either. Through the accumulation of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), they turn time into form layer by layer.
Calcium carbonate is also a material I frequently use in my work, employed to shape textures that evoke sedimentation and weathering.
Coral looks like stone, yet it is alive. Beneath its hard surface lies a continuously growing organism; living matter and dead structures are layered together, with the present existence built upon layers that have already perished.
Just like the women in my memories—resilient yet seemingly fragile, bearing scars beneath their beauty.
