About this work
A woman lies on her back across the centre with eyes closed, dressed in white embroidered with gold patterns, one hand hanging loose. Beneath her, rust-red and deep-green leaves intertwine; above, rune-like white and black strokes float across a deep blue ground. A glint of gold leaf traces her head – between the still figure and the drifting glyphs, it is as if sounds are falling upon her.

Chant of Sibilant is an original work by YuTung Ko (2026), mineral pigments, metal leaf and mixed media on paper mounted on wooden board, 21 × 27 cm. You are welcome to book a visit to view it in person at Neverland Gallery in Xinyi District, Taipei.

Sibilant refers to the hissing sound produced by the friction of airflow, and it is the sound in human speech closest to a spell.

Chanting (chant) is a ritual of imposing meaning upon an object. It requires neither the consent of the object nor for the object to be awake.

These sounds fall upon her. She is neither a conversationalist nor a listener, but rather more like a surface being continuously written upon.

She does not voice; she is voiced.
